Film Posters - Romantic Comedy - 'There's Something About Mary'
The second poster I will be looking at is for There's Something About Mary.
- Tagline - "No animals were harmed in the making of this movie. Everybody else was on their own" - this implies that there will be disaster and destruction in the film - which you would expect in a farcical romantic comedy.
- Colour Scheme - There are many colours in this film poster, such as green, pink, blue and black on the film title (as well as a lot of whits). The multiple colours present a light-hearted feel to the poster, as well as it being predominantly light in colour suggesting an upbeat, positive movie. Softer, pastel colours are frequently use in the marketing materials for rom-coms.
- Mise-en-scene - The image includes a dog in a full body cast, which suggests over-dramatic comedy and farcical outcomes, as well as the collar tag being a heart (suggesting romance).
- Stars - Ben stiller is, again, usually in comedies and Cameron Diaz is a "conventionally" attractive woman, so we'd expect the casting director to cast her as a lead romantic role. She has appeared in numerous rom-coms, often with outrageous farcical elements, such as The Mask and Bad Teacher.
- Director - "From the directors of 'Dumb & Dumber' and 'Kingpin'", which are both farces, with romantic narrative threads to them (the Farrelly Brothers are noted for making farces).
- Font - Serif font, which is common in rom-coms (though, this time it is in capitals).
