Film Posters - Romantic Comedy - 'The 40 Year-Old Virgin'

The fifth poster I will be looking at is for The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

The rom-com/farce genre comes across in this poster through the:
  • Tagline - "The longer you wait the harder it gets" is a euphemism and therefore has a comedic effect. It also implies that the protagonist cannot find love, which is a typical narrative trope of the genre.
  • Colour Scheme - There is a lot of red/pink in this poster, including glow of red in the background, and this colour relates to romance.
  • Mise-en-scene - There is the main character sat awkwardly in the middle of two other couples making out. This shows romance (the other couples), and comedy from Steve Carell's unsettled face and body language. The contrast in the characters' costumes adds to the comedic effect.
  • Stars - Steve Carell is usually cast in comedies/rom-coms, such as Crazy, Stupid, Love, Date Night and Dinner for Schmucks.
  • The "V" in the title is meant to look like a trouser's zipper, which refers to sex and comedy (typical components of rom-com/farces).
