Analysing Romantic Comedy Taglines
During my research into posters and trailers (and to a lesser extent, social media pages) I have noticed that films often have taglines on their marketing materials to help promote the film. Taglines are instantly memorable, short and catchy slogans. They usually indicate to the audience (through the language used) the genre the film belongs to and often make some kind of reference to the narrative of the movie (which is also often related to genre).
I've picked a number of taglines from films from my genre to see if there is some kind of consistency to them. This will help me when I come up with some ideas for my taglines, which I will use on my poster and across my trailers.
Some of the similarities between these taglines from films from my genre, are that they often ask a question to the audience, for example "What if this guy got you pregnant?" or "Can the most famous film star in the world fall for the man on the street?".
Many also refer to a problematic incident or some sort of conflict, for example "First comes love. then comes the interrogation".
A lot of the taglines are also humorous, either including a pun or a play on words/punch line to a joke, for example "Better late than never" and "From gentle to mental".
Most of the taglines have two or three parts to them, for example "One wedding. One simple plan. What could possibly go wrong?" and "All women keep score...only the great ones put it in writing".
