Romantic Comedy Trailers - 'Knocked Up'

I am now going to look at five existing trailers for films from my genre, and list how the rom-com/farce genre is presented in each of these trailers.

Knocked Up

  • Main production company is Universal - common for rom-coms
  • Classic male and female leads
  • Upbeat music
  • Quick cut to stupid and irresponsible behaviour, from sophisticated behaviour, accompanied by immediate change in music
  • Reference to other rom-coms
  • Taglines are more like a muted voiceover narrating the base of the story
  • High-key lighting
  • Party/club scene
  • Meet cute in the club
  • Both of the main leads have a best friend (confidant character)
  • The best friends of the leads start flirting
  • The male lead being goofy and dancing stupidly
  • Clip of them in a sexual setting
  • Compliments
  • The 'morning after' clip
  • Talk about her being pregnant
  • Unintelligent replies which leave space for audience laughter (where the music stops)
  • Quick clips showcasing everyone's feelings about the situation
  • Solution: get to know each other
  • Fades as an editing transition, common for rom-coms
  • Summer release - typical for rom-coms
  • Jokes/laughter
  • Advice given from one of the lead's friends about marriage
  • Clip of the male and female leads holding hands for the first time
