Romantic Comedy Trailers - 'There's Something About Mary'
The fourth trailer I am going to analyse for my genre is:
There's Something About Mary
- Stereotypically popular, pretty girl and unpopular, awkward guy - creates binary opposite which allows for comedy
- Subject of prom
- High-key lighting
- 20th Century Fox - common production company for rom-coms
- Image of 2 doves - symbol of love and peace, which then gets contrasted with the terrible and painful scene of the main character getting his zipper caught on his private area ,which contributes to the farcical comedic element of the rom-com genre
- Ben Stiller, a common actor for comedies and rom-coms
- Classic side friend for the main male lead (confidant character type), who talks about him having a crush that lasted for 13 years
- A lot of guys calling Mary a "fox" all individually in different clips, which amplifies to the audience how much all these guys really find Mary attractive
- Comedic character (always gets into a mess)
- "This Summer" as a release date - rom-coms are commonly released in the summer/spring time, as they are fun and light movies which corresponds to the time of year
- Antagonist who tries to steal protagonist's love life/girl - he may be the obstacle in the narrative
- Mention of other comedies
- Directors "The Farrelly Brothers" usually work on farcical comedies
- Unnecessary violence - common for comedies and farces
- Over-exaggerated stunts (which happens in farces)
